The Joy of Music & Movement with Polly the Collie

The movements practiced in the Polly the Collie songbook (downloadable at www.englishpolly.com) are not just for fun! They exercise both brain hemispheres in young children for better language learning, and actually help develop social skills.

We all enjoy teaching the song and movements to “Head Shoulders, Knees and Toes”; in lessons, however for younger children, it may not be ideal. The up and down movements can be difficult and even dizzying for some youngsters, especially when they can’t maintain all important eye contact with teachers and classmates.

Polly the Collie songs are fun, lively and up-to-date, with accompanying moments that are easier for pre-school and kindergarten children. Songs like “Move Your Body” help children move in a natural, rhythmic way to better absorb a new language. The song “Let’s All Dance Together” gives children the opportunity to dance freely; twisting twirling running and jumping. Performing the arm-rolling exercises between choruses allows children to keep their heads up and eyes focused on each other and the social interaction going on around them, while integrating both right and left-side brain hemispheres for optimum learning.
